FG speaking: We visited Charley last Sunday---it is amazing what
progress he has been making since he has been in the Mennonite (sp) nursing
home in Albany. He still cannot speak but he is eating by mouth and can
wiggle his paralyzed arm and legs just a little bit. He smiles constantly
and is sharp mentally---in fact he can play checkers and Alice says he wins!
(Sorry for the repeats!)
Another wonder person that is hard to believe, is how our brother
Jimmie F. (Sr.) is handling his fight with that "Big C" as he calls it. We
were together at the K of C dinner the other night---he had had treatment
shots that day and would
 Jim Fromherz |
have more
follow-up shots this week. He had to turn down being a delegate at a K of C function, is
having to miss his "ship’s reunion for the 1st time and
also won’t be going to Yakima to help in the apple harvest. In other
words, this new attack by that cancer "bug" is a stubborn one even for
the doctors. Buuuuut don’t be too surprised if you hear that he goes
apple picking, and goes to his ship reunion---he’s done that many
times before in spite of everything against him. Don’t give up praying
for him daily! |
Another person that needs our constant prayers is Walt’s and
Eleanora’s son Max. The have been caring for him constantly now for many
months with frequent emergency visits to the doctors and hospital. Up to now
his condition has been a puzzle to the doctors and hospital. They have
finally diagnosed him as of September 25th as having CVS (cyclic
vomiting syndrome) with no known cure or how one gets such a rare
affliction. Today he is mobile and drives to his place 3 miles from our.
Tomorrow he could be vomiting every ten minutes for as long as 18 hours or
more. He has to stay in bed and is in bad shape. (So don’t give up on
praying for him along with Jimmie and Charley…and at the same time add a
prayer for their "care givers" who are about worn out and suffering, too,
right along with their loved ones! FG)

Lets
give thanks on this Thanksgiving Day 2000 for the many years that we have
been together as one close loving family.
Dear Family,
Y2K started out with a BANG! for
us. We attended the Asian Automotive Trade Show in New Delhi, India in
January. Was very interesting. I now have a better perception of how
crowded they are! We kicked off our Heavy Duty Clutch to the Asian market
and was surprised to be of enough interest to them to have press coverage of
our attendance. We didn’t even have a clue that they were planning on having
the press receive us! We also saw the Taj Mahal and actually saw elephants
and camels pulling huge carts in the traffic……no lanes, all on the left side
of the road (which for us is the wrong side of the street!) and as many
cars, carts, mopeds, 3-wheeled taxi’s,
| |
busses,
trucks abreast that the street would hold…they definitely have a pecking
order for traffic…the biggest gets the right of way and everyone smaller
moves farther to the left…and of course they all drive with their horns!
How else would you know that another vehicle bigger than you is taking
over the road and you’re the one in a lesser position in the pecking
order?! And, of course, we took about 10 rolls of film and have a
Great Photo Album of our trip for any of you that wish to visit us in
Spokane! |

In February we attended
the Wishmeyer Family reunion (Jim’s new found biological family) on a
Caribbean cruise…And, while
we were cruising in the Caribbean we became first time grandparents to Baby Gale who arrived 1 week early on February 16, 2000 weighing in at 7#
9oz…(No, she didn’t wait for our return as promised!) We attempted to
purchase commercial property and thought we would close sometime in December
or January. But, that fell through because of some DEQ issues with the
previous owner, so we have temporarily put

Baby Gale Meets Grandma G |
it on the back burner…still looking for commercial land but will
probably build to better suit our business…All in due time!
After the reunion, Jim headed south to Sacramento
California
to see his biological sister Carol and have his adoption papers unsealed
by the court…which has been
successful. He then headed to Las Vegas to attend a tradeshow.
He came home for another month then went to Vancouver Island, |
|
Calgary and Edmonton to teach clutch &
brake clinics. We just returned from our Gold Wing vacation touring the
Montana Ghost towns on our Gold Wing (motorcycle) taking in Glacier, &
Yellowstone as well. And, we took several more rolls of film of our trip so
we will soon have another Photo Album to share with you when you come to
visit in Spokane.

I
have been talking with Florence about the transition of the Newsletter and
asked her how I could help her, knowing how much she enjoys doing the
Newsletter. It is always so bittersweet to change or give up something
that she has created, developed, loved and cherished. Several phone calls
and mailings later, I think we have come up with a plan. Florence wants to
continue at this time to put the newsletter together, doing her Cut & Paste
thing. She will then send it to me to word process. I will develop a
family e-mail listing and send by e-mail to those who wish to receive the
newsletter electronically. I will also do the copying/printing of the snail
mail Newsletter for those who do not have e-mail. We still haven’t decided
if I will then send them back to her to mail or if I am going to mail them.
Florence is updating her mailing list for me. She is also updating the
family tree information along with births, deaths, marriages, and current
addresses & phone numbers.
The next mailing of the
Family Newsletter will be sometime in early November, after the Mt. Angel
Oktoberfest. I have checked into developing a Web page but found that the
name FromTheHeart.com is already taken. I went into that web page and found
that it has not as of yet, been developed. I was wondering if someone in
our family has secured that website. My plan was to have the Newsletter
eventually become available on the Website to limit the incompatibilities of
the different word programs. If anyone in our family has already secured
this website, please contact me so we can create something for the
Newsletter. My e-mail address is
congale@aol.com. I have already contacted those of you that I have
e-mail addresses. If you have an e-mail address and have not been contacted
by me please contact me by e-mail so I can continue to develop my family
e-mail address list. You can also send your letters to the Family
Newsletter to me via e-mail and I will get them to Florence. Be patient
with us…God isn’t finished with us yet!
I have several e-mail
addresses for Art’s, Jim’s, Mary’s, Charlie’s, Al’s, Josephine’s families.
I have one e-mail address for Florence’s family and none for Joe’s or
Walt’s.
I am
sending along your individual electronic communications to Florence so she
can make it in this newsletter.
David
(Gross) would like to have a special commemorative section on our Grandpa
Fromherz . I
think it is a good idea for those of us who were fortunate to know him to
share our remembrances of our Grandfather. Please put your stories to paper
and submit to the Newsletter so that we can continue to share our family
legacy especially to those younger family members who have not had the
opportunity to personally know their Grandfather.
Hoping that the Holidays finds all of you in God’s warmth and Peace.

Dear Connie: I am stealing part of your space to announce
another 1999 birth---it
is your little nephew, Gabriel Anthony that came to Wayne and Denise
Fromherz on January 22, 1999. Congratulations, Wayne and Denise. Sorry I
missed announcing his arrival last year. Now you have 5 beautiful
children…hope to get acquainted with them one of these days.
Have I missed any other 1999 arrivals in any other family? Let
Connie or myself
know so we can get it in the next newsletter? FG

Holt writes:
Hi,
Connie, Just a quick note, I am glad you are working on the newsletter. I
know it was
getting too much for Aunt Florence to do. She is so wonderful to have kept
our family in contact.
We have had a very bust summer. Chris and Brian both played
baseball this spring. Then Chris tried out for the Allstar team. They went
on to win district 7 and we were headed to state playoffs in Ontario,
Oregon. They won on Tuesday and we had to leave on Friday. It was very hot
112 degrees the first day they played. They ended up 5th in the
state. It was a lot of fun.
Chris and Brian both tested for their karate brown belts and
passed. Travis is getting big and really likes to go to everything the boys
are doing. He talks up a storm and is getting to a real fun age.
Anyway I better get going. Talk with you soon. Love, Mary

Hi
Aunt Connie, How has everything been going for you and your family? I just
got your e-mail. I am extremely busy this semester. I am putting in 15
hours a week for my intern at an advertising agency (very interesting) and
then 20 hours a week helping coach the softball team (for my softball
scholarship). I can no longer play because the NCAA only allows an
athlete to be eligible for 4 years. And finally, I am taking 11 credit
hours of classes. I also keep busy with having 4 roommates.
They are a lot of fun and we aren’t too crowded. Our |

house is three stories and my dad did a lot of work on
it while he was here (He built us a room in which we can hang all of our
clothes, shelves, a counter for getting ready with two huge mirrors and plug-ins.) It is awesome!
Anyway you should have my e-mail address and my parents do not
have e-mail. Talk with you later, Heidi

Brother Gerard David writes: Dear Dad and Mom and Family,
Peace be with you all. We’ve had a very full summer. Two weeks (one in the
spring and one late June) were spent with community meetings twice a day
filling 3 to 6 hours of our day with discussion to prepare us elect our new
Abbott. We also had two weeks of Br. Ron Fogarty workshop with almost as
heavy a schedule, except he added homework for us to do in between session.
In May Fr. Kenneth Baker SJ the editor of Homiletic and Pastoral Review gave
us a weeklong retreat.
Meanwhile, I’ve been writing a book on Bonsai spirituality for
Hill Street Press, in Athens, Georgia. Also, I finished another short book,
called Be Still, Listen and See, published by Br. Charminade in
house, The book on Bonsai spirituality is just now getting the editing
stage, It is due to arrive at the publisher by Nov. 1st. Then
they hope to have it on the market by spring 2001. So please pray for me.
It’s a great learning experience. With my record in English I never dreamed
that I’d ever attempt to write a book.
But all this is little news. We have big news. On August 4,
2000, we elected Fr. Basil Pennington, OCSO, STL, JCL as our new Abbot. He
is one of the most renowned writers on prayer in the world that I know of.
He’s written over fifty books and published about a thousand articles in
various languages. He was a co-founder of Cistercian Publications in 1968
with Thomas Merton and founded the
Institute of
Cistercian Studies at
Western University. A big man of 6’4” with the build of a lineman, he
brings a lot of enthusiasm to our community. Being a man of prayer par
excellence, he brings a deep sense of reverence into our liturgy. The
Abbatial Blessing is the birthday of Mary September 8th.
Both our Abbey Store (www.abbeystore.org)
and Bonsai (www.bonsaimonk.com)
have new web sites to sell our produces on line. The Bonsai web site will
be ready sometime in October, while the Abbey Stores web site is already up
and running. Yours in Jesus and Mary, Br. Gerard David OCSO
Brother Gerard sends another short note to ask for e-mail addresses for his
brother and sisters (probably has them by now?) He also asks , “Did you get
my message about this November 15 being Grandpa Adolf’s 50th
Anniversary of his death? It would be good to have Family tell their
memories of him in a newsletter. It is also the 50th Anniversary
of the Family reunions.” Brother Gerard David
gerard@trappist.net (Florence’s son)
(Ed. FG note---Good idea, David, Here’s a note for everyone!
Please will all those that knew Grandpa Adolf Fromherz write a note or a
letter about your memory of him to Connie for the newsletter. Since we do
not know when the next newsletter will be, please send it soon so she will
have it “whenever”. FG )
(Ed. cg Note---I plan to keep the newsletter on the same schedule that
Florence has had for the past several years…two times a year…so the next one
will be in the spring April or May just prior to the Family Reunion….unless
enough of you think we need to do this more often…Let me know…you know my
address and e-address. cg)

(Col.) Judy sends and e-mail message to Connie:
Hey there! Wow you are taking it on! Good Luck! Aunt Florence asked me
again at the senior’s dinner and I told her that I couldn’t! Anyway, I got
your message and am just having the opportunity to write you back. One
note, I think a question that you should ask everyone is…can your system
handle attachments? Also, what word program are you planning on using…not
everyone will have that either! I work with a number of reservists and run
into that constantly! Again Great Luck and if you need assistance, just
holler! Love your gumption! Judy

It has been a busy summer since our trip to
Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and Canada. Over 3,000 miles on the road. Found
gas to be cheaper in other states, with our 51-cent Federal, State, and
local gas tax in Nevada. It is currently not easy to find gas under $1.90.
After our vacation, we took Kevin back to BSA camp on our
way home. He worked on camp staff until August 6th, when camp was over.
Picked him up on Sunday the 6th of August and he came home to wash his
clothes and right to BSA Leadership camp staff, for another week. He finally
spent a
night at home on Saturday August 12th, 1st time since June 15th. The next
weekend Kevin and I were backpacking with the older boys in the Troop, in
the Sierra's, below LakeTahoe. First time since leaving
Oregon that I have done some real backpacking and it was great to get the
old pack on
the back. What was even more amazing was that I could still do it!! Kevin
should be completing his Eagle project this Fall and earning his rank of
Eagle Scout. Kevin is a Sophomore this Fall at McQueen High.
Peter went to BSA camp the 1st week of August and I was
able to spend a couple of days with him. Kevin was an instructor in one of
Peter's merit badge classes. Peter worked hard and advanced a rank, while at
camp. We had bears making regular night-time visits through our camp, so we
had to
be very careful with anything that smelled good. "Bear Bags" in a tree,
was a regular routine and so was running bears out of camp, by staff. Kevin
was part of a regular nighttime bear patrol. The second weekend of September
Peter went on his 1st backpacking trip with the troop. It was a short hike
with a pack, but good experience putting everything on your back and hiking
a mile and one-half. Kevin and I were also on the hike. Peter is a 6th
Grader this Fall at St. Alberts.
Paul missed his brothers, when they were both at camp.
For a whole week, it was just Mom and Paul, because I was also working out
of town, when I wasn't at camp with Peter and Kevin. Paul had his 9th
Birthday on August 19 and we enjoyed a family fun day. Paul and Peter were
real
fisherman over Labor Day weekend, unfortunately the fish didn't know it.
We went on a family camp to a local reservoir, with another family that has
3 boys almost the same ages as our three. Of course it had to rain, our
first cool and rainy days for most of the summer. It did warm up by
Monday. Paul is now out for Fall baseball. It is just a skills building
league and no score is kept. He is also our last one in the Cub Scout Pack
as a Bear. Paul is a 3rd grader at
St. Albert this Fall.
Marie is now back to work full time. During the summer
months she only works part time and could spend more time with the boys,
usually a weekly trip to Tahoe was on the agenda. She was going to be an
assistant Den Leader for Paul's Bear Den, but they now have plenty of
leadership and
she may not be needed. She is still singing in the church choir and an
officer in the K of C Women's Auxiliary. Helping the boys with homework is a
nightly actively and at least a couple of hours in time.
AND...I in my cap....!!!!! Completed my 7th year working for the KofC.
I spent a lot more time this last summer with the boys and Boy Scouts. It
was great to be out with them!! I was the Pack chairperson for Fall
recruiting and it was very successful. The Pack is right at 100 boys and we
may need to split the Pack. It is almost too big! I haven't had a chance to
climb MT. Rose this Fall, but hope a couple more nice weekends are in store,
before Winter is here. The mountain has already had a couple of early Fall
dusting, but looks like it has melted off.
Now that I have written, it is your turn!!! AND....don't
just BURP!!!! (send recycled jokes and stories that you have digested). We
want to hear some real news. God Bless and Love to all.

Tyler Gerding gains recognition
with the LEGO systems
Ken &
Robbi tell the story before and after: As many of you know Tyler was the
runner up in the Lego contest in New York City
in April. John Lavery of Ohio was to represent the United States in the
LEGO World Championship this Friday at LEGO land in California. We received
a call from LEGO on Tuesday morning that John was possibly not going to be
able to go and would we be ready to go.

Mary Gerding |
This
morning, Wednesday, we found out for sure that
Tyler
will be the representative for the United States in the age 11-16
category. There are 2 contestants, one in the 5-10 age group and
one in the 11-16 age group, for each country. There will be 18
countries from around the globe competing. We fly down to San
Diego tomorrow morning. The contest will be a 2-hour build off on
Friday morning.
LEGO
holds a world championship every 4 years. The last time the United States
participated in this was 1992. We are excited about this opportunity for
Tyler
to meet so many people from around the world that share his passion for
LEGO. We will keep you informed. |
|
After:
Tyler didn’t win
his age division but gave it a gallant try. You can find out more details
at
www.rebelscum.com and click on “Coverage of the LEGO GALACTIC CHALLENGE”
located at the top center of their home page. LEGO had asked Tyler if he
would be willing to give an interview to this company, so he did. The
pictures will give you an idea of what the build off was like. Thank you for
all the good
wishes,

WE ATTENDED THE WEDDING OF JOE’S FRANK F. AND BRIDGET COOKE On
October 4TH at

THIS VERY BEAUTIFUL CHURCH ON THE FEAST DAY OF ST. FRANCIS OF

BARBARA WAS THE PIANIST---HER RENDITION OF THE “WALTZ OF THE FLOWERS”,
FROM TSCHAIKOVSKY’S NUTCRACKER SUITE WAS THE MOST OUTSTANDING I HAVE EVER
HEARD IT BY ANY MUSICIAN. BARBARA WAS IN A WHEEL CHAIR AS SHE IS
PREGNANT AND HAS SOME PROBLEM (LETS PRAY FOR HER).
THE RECEPTION WAS EQUALLY OUTSTANDING, HELD AT THE CENTRO CULTURAL
CENTER IN CORNELIUS. THE PROGRAM WAS EQUALLY STIMULATING AND THE FOOD
WONDERFULLY GOOD. OF COURSE MARGY MADE AND DECORATED THE CAKE AND WE
ESPECIALLY ENJOYED “LITTLE” LOUIS ON THE PIANO. (WE CALL HIM “LITTLE” LOUIS
BECAUSE BEFORE HE WAS BORN HIS MOTHER SAID THEY WOULD NAME HIM LOUIS AFTER
OUR LOUIS AND WE WERE TO BE HIS GODPARENTS SOOOOOOO, HE STARTED OUT TO BE
“LITTLE” LOUIS TO DISTINGUISH HIM FROM HIS GODFATHER “BIG” LOUIS.) (A FEW

Hi Connie, Greetings from the Zollners in Eugene!
Christiana, our youngest, will turn 10 this November Here's a little
update on our doings… is a 4th grader in school and is involved in a small ensemble of young
string players, as well as Girl Scouts.
Tecie turned 15 last May, started her freshman year at
Churchill High School this Fall, where she's particularly enjoying being a
member of the dance team. She's continuing percussion lessons and
participating in
Eugene's
Junior Orchestra.
Monica just turned 16 and is learning to drive. She's a sophomore
this year at Churchill, continuing her studies at the clarinet, and is a
member of
Eugene's
Youth Symphony. She continues her involvement with Girls Scouts and has
recently taken up welding!
Katie started her freshman year at the U of O this fall, majoring in
Pre-Education. She's employed part-time by Lane Memorial Blood Bank and
volunteers at church, teaching 2nd Grade religious education.
We're still enjoying making music together as a family--just got
finished with Oktoberfest in Mt. Angel and have several fund-raiser dinners
this Fall/Winter: 11/5 at our own parish, St. Jude, in Eugene; 11/12 at St.
James in McMinnville; and 1/14 at the Mt. Angel Brewery for the Fr. Taafe
(sp?) Foundation. We got a web site put together recently for Z-Musikmakers:
www.Zmusikmakers.com, where you can
get information regarding times, prices, etc. if interested.
Paul is doing financial planning through AXA Advisors, still working
out of his
Eugene office. We're mourning the loss of his sister, Marilyn, who passed
away peacefully on September 19th, after having been on dialysis and in poor
health for many years.
I (Pat) am back teaching piano out of our home and directing music at
our parish--enjoying more control over my schedule than when I was doing
office/design work. It's a busy time in our lives, chaotic sometimes, but
rich in blessings.
I
think it's old news for most of you that as a young college student I had
the difficult experience of facing an unplanned pregnancy, gave birth to a
healthy daughter and in her best interests, placed her for adoption. She,
Erin Layna Kelley, was raised by loving parents in Canby and has blossomed
into a lovely, thoughtful and intelligent young woman. We had the pleasure
of being reunited on the occasion of her 19th birthday in 1994, thanks to a
registry managed by the adoption agency, and over the past 6 years we've
enjoyed getting to know one another. I am especially careful to respect her
relationship with her parents--she and I consider ourselves more like
"kindred spirits." Undeniably though, there's the physical resemblance, and
as you can imagine, she's curious to meet you all. This year she has begun
a two-year assignment as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Slovakia.
She's going to share some news of her life there in this newsletter. So I
hope you'll forgive me for keeping this a secret from you over the years, I
hope you'll welcome Erin as a wonderful "kindred spirit," and
have the pleasure of meeting her some day soon.
Love
you all, Pat (Florence’s daughter)

THERE ARE SEVERAL OTHER FROMHERZ ADOPTEES
In
our family---maybe you would like to write a story about yourself for
another newsletter—how you became one of our family---you know how we love
and understand each other.
HERE IS ERIN’S LETTER TO THE NEWSLETTER
Sent to Connie and her birth mother Pat Zollner and now to the Fromherz
cousins, Aunts and Uncles that she wants to become close family friends.
Hopefully she can meet many of you at our family reunions in the future.
Subject:
Fromherz newsletter
Dear Connie,
Greetings from Slovakia! I decided that it's finally time for me to submit
something to the Fromherz "From the Heart" newsletter. Pat may have written
or talked to you already, so I don't know if this message is coming to you
as a surprise or not. Hopefully it is not. But in the case that it is - I
am Pat's birthdaughter and am in the Peace Corps in Slovakia. Pat and I met
over 6 years ago and have been keeping in touch ever since. I also write to
Florence and Louis off and on. :)
I have regular access to
email, so please let me know if you'd like me to clarify anything or answer
any special questions for the newsletter article. I can also shorten it, if
need be. Here it is:
Four months ago,
it had never occurred to me that I would be sitting here, in this
'developing' country, writing emails, watching the Olympics on satellite TV,
or talking on a cell phone. That picture had been reserved for my graduate
school colleagues, whose career paths all went different (and more
profitable) ways than mine. My new image of Peace Corps (PC) service is
certainly different than the one most people have. But then Slovakia isn't
like most other PC countries - which helps to explain why I'm part of the
last PC group to come here.
As a small business development volunteer, I'm not actually working for a
business. Instead, I am working for a community foundation and a
governmental office. Community foundations, generally, are non-profit
organizations that give money to groups of people who want to help improve
their communities. I am trying to help the PreÜov Community Foundation with
their fundraising efforts so that they can continue giving grants to people
in PreÜov, the city where I now live.
I am not yet sure what I will be doing at the government office, as my
counterpart there has been away all month. But I do know that he is the
deputy for Romany (Gypsy) affairs and that I will work with him in an
administrative capacity. His absence has been a mixed blessing. I do not
know what my 'work' will be, but I have gained greater exposure to the
day-to-day lives of the Roma in a nearby settlement.
Many Romany people are living in extreme poverty and almost all of them are
greatly discriminated against by the majority. With my 'business'
assignment, I thought I would be working for small-scale craftsmen and
somewhat educated individuals. (Slovakia's population is very well
educated.) It was quite a shock to stumble upon the 'third world' right
here in the middle of a country with so many modern amenities. So my 'third'
job is now to work with the Romany and to help them improve their lives and
livelihoods. And in so doing, my life will surely improve as well!
It's been said that the Peace Corps is "the toughest job you'll ever love."
So far, I believe it. And I hope to still believe it in July of 2002, when
I come back home.
Take care, and feel free to write!

I SPEAK FOR THE FROMHERZ FAMILY IN CONGRATULATIONS…To two of our
Fromherz adoptees that have “found” each other in the e-mail program. They
are Connie’s husband, Jim Gale and our granddaughter, Erin Kelley
erinlayna@altaviavista.com
Erin
is a volunteer in the foreign Peace Corps program in the Slovakia Republic.
She is fortunate to be able to use e-mail to correspond with those in U.S.A.
HERE IS A HEART WARMING E-MAIL LETTER THAT JIM GALE
Has sent to
Erin:
God, it’s a small
world. First I’m Connie’s husband. I just read the e-mail you sent for the
newsletter and the one received by Pat today also. Connie’s father is Jim
Fromherz and he is Florence’s younger brother. Connie is the oldest of the
7 kids.
The small world thing is that for years we lived in Canby and our kids
went to 91 grade school and then on to Lasalle High School. We lived off of
Barlow Rd. for over 25 years. (Ed FG note, Erin was raised in Canby)
JIM CONTINUES---
I’m an adopted child myself and found my brother and sisters only 3
years ago. What fun we have been having catching up on almost 50 years of
not knowing each other.
I heard about you from Florence 2-3 years ago while sharing with her
that I found my brother and sisters.
Welcome to our
family.
Hope to get a
chance to talk with you in the future and meet you in person some day. I
have several things that I must get back to but needed to take the time and
say HI!
Have a
great day and waiting to hear more about your time in the pc.
Dear Jim G. your letter to Erin is a jewel---
It
is a heart-warming thriller to all of us that know and love Erin. Now she
is living as a member of our wonderful Fromherz family. Thanks millions for
helping her to be accepted and loved by all of us---since Connie and I have
been working together on this letter, these happy messages will go out to
over 120 family members. We love both you and
Connie FG
We received a big box of goodies from
Our
wonderful Van Etten cousins. Paul V’E’s wife Peng is a real Santa Claus
(the package was from her) with gifts that I will share with family (but you
will have to come visit us if you would like one of her gifts?)
Some day I would like to give the newsletter a “write-up” on the Van
Ettens. They are sons of our Aunt Florence (King). She and her husband
were missionaries for many years in
China---
her 5 boys were all born there. Son Don Van Etten and his wife Tam are
looking for our uncle Bill King and Glady. They live at 859 Meadowood,
circle, McMinnville, Oregon 97128. Their lives are spent working in the
Meadowood care center and busy civic workers and are very active with the
Oregon and Yamhill county Retired Teachers Associations.
Some of you young folks may not know that Bill King is the lone
survivor of the Abe King Family (our mother Lucy King’s brother) he is 92
years old. Both he and Gladys are in fragile health and are living in the
Altura Wynwood care center in McMinnville. Their address is: Mr. And Mrs.
C.W. King, 721 NW 27th St.,
McMinnville,
Oregon 97128. Do stop by and have a good visit with them.
We haven’t heard from the Yakima Families
But we know they have been and probably
are still working at harvesting their apple crop. Since this newsletter has
“snowballed” with e-mail letters and is about to burst it’s seams, we will
extend their greetings to the family at this time and hope they will give a
full report for the next newsletter.
Karen (Gerding) Raskin sends a note…Dear
aunt
Florence
and newsletter family; We have had a very busy summer as everyone else has
also.
We have a new granddaughter, Shelbee Lynn Campbell, born to Kelly and
Tom on August 17, 2000. Now TJ (2 year old) is a big brother.
Our other good news is that our granddaughter Cheyenne Loper, Kim and
Ron’s daughter is finally coming off some of the oxygen she has been on for
about 2 years. She still has to use it at night while sleeping---but what a
blessing.
Being grandparents of 3 keeps us busy and we love it. (FG Ed.
Note---Then she gave a complete listing with addresses, telephone and e-mail
numbers that everyone will have when we put out the new address book).
Karen continues---Well I think that is all of the corrections mom told me
that you needed. Hope this finds you both well. Blessings in Christ, Karen

Her
p.s. says she wants the family newsletter to come by “Snail Mail”!---I think
Connie is asking how each one wants the newsletter to come to them, e-mail
or snail mail. Let her know if you haven’t been asked? (I, FG will be
mailing the snail mail like always). Will do! Cg
Yes, Kathy Cappetta Both Connie and I
have received your communications and
appreciate your promptness. Here is Kathy’s e-mail letter to us:
Hi Aunt Florence,
Congratulations on your new digs! We’ve been on the move
ourselves. We have a new address and new happenings!
We have closed the electronic repair shop part of our
business. We are now fully into Internet web site development and design
from our home office. One of our own web sites MusicSpotlight.com is taking
off and the live radio show we do on KCLA-99.3FM
Los Angeles is going great.
Our Music Spotlight Radio Show has an Internet simulcast
in case anyone wants to tune in and listen via WebRadio at
www.KCLAFM.com at
2:00pm Pacific time every Saturday afternoon. After the live
broadcast, I post the archive of the show on our web site at
MusicSpotlight.com for listening at your leisure and it’s available all week
until the next week’s archive replaces it.
We have picked up an engineering contract at the radio
station KCLA and work there two days a week. Mike has had his FCC
RadioTelephone Operators License which is required to engineer a commercial
radio station since 1978, he had me get my FCC broadcast permit a few years
back. We still use our A+ Certifications in Computer Repair at the radio
station keeping their network and computers up and running.
We really enjoy the engineering work, the web work, and
the radio show.
Our phone number remains the same, our new mailing
address is:

Hope this gets to you in the time frame you are looking for, I will also
email it to Connie Gale so she won’t have to re-type it.

Josephine’s Jenny keeps in touch. She writes.
Dear
Aunt Florence,
We
are all fine and keeping quite busy. Garrick has graduated from High School
and is now working at Parr Lumber. He has joined the Air Force and will
enter in May. Kelly is a junior and is doing well in school with a 4.0 GPA
last semester.
We
tool our yearly trip to Missouri last June, which meant we missed the
reunion again. We are planning to make it to the reunion next year.
Steve’s folks are doing pretty well, considering. We did a car trip this
time, thinking it might be the last time the four of us would be together
for such a trip. Besides, we had four drivers to take turns. Worked out
pretty well. We went to Missouri, on to Steve’s middle brother n Arkansas,
and then we all went together to their oldest brother in Texas. We had a
great time. It’s always so much fun to see the three brothers together.
I’m
still quite busy with interpreting. The business has really boomed and some
days it is hard for the agencies to meet the demand. After nearly 20 years
of freelancing I still love it. I still meet people who knew either mom or
dad from school days and I love to hear what they have to say about them.
Thanks so much, Aunt Florence, for doing the newsletter all these years.
It’s such a great way to keep the family in touch, especially for those of
us who aren’t as good about keeping in touch as others might be. And, thanks
to Connie for being willing to take on this project. Good luck, Connie, I’m
sure you will do a fine job. With Love, Jenny

Janet (Gerding) King Writes touching memories…
of
“yester-year” Days: Dear Aunt Florence, Just writing your name brings back
so many wonderful childhood memories. As I drive home from work and see the
hay fields I remember the hot days when Claire and I built forts in the
fresh cut straw; And then one time Uncle Tommy came and helped us while at
one of those early family reunions. And how Claire and I would go hide down
at the river and watch it meander along while we spent hours solving all the
issues of the day. It seems girls learn how to visit at a very early age!
And all the fair exhibits, 4H, etc….Ah, such fun it is to
remember such happy times----How about the time you and Uncle Louie took
down that big round of cheese that was months old and stored in the
attic….oh, was it ever good….so good, I’ve never had any cheese before or
since that tasted so good!
Then Janet brought us up to date on the arrival
of their 1999
grandchildren that we didn’t get listed in our records: They are, Brian and
Tammy’s Jessica Ann King, born April 4, 1999 on Easter Sunday. Teresa and
Kurt Chione’s Cecelia Marie Chione, born December 17, 1999. Mary and Jim
Babic’s Ann Mary Babic born April 1, 1999. Mary and Jim are expecting
Sophia Mary or Nicholous Mark on November 3, 2000.

Congratulations Parents, Grandparents and Great “GrandMary”
Thank You Janet----sorry
the announcements are so late---also thanks for wedding dates, etc. that I
didn’t have before for your family. FG

Holiday Greetings for Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas…
Br. Gerard David's reflections on the passing of Grandpa Fromherz ...
September 2000
(Ed. cg note: I have edited this for length and privacy.)
gerard@trappist.net (Florence’s
son)
Dear Connie:
Grandpa's Father Peter died when he was about two years
old. His mother Klara Lieber Frommherz died when he was in his teens. His
passport is dated 1891. Mom remembers that he came over when he was
seventeen. That is still possible since passports are good for several
years. He was raised with his Leiber cousins in
Kansas. He worked in the woods for a few years before coming out west and
farming near Corvallis and the Kings. Thus he met and married Lucy King.
That was a rather traumatic experience for great grandma King to loose her
daughter to become a Catholic. She treated the Grandchildren very well
though! Grandma and Grandpa did not get along well. They fought a lot
verbally raising their voices. Thus, when Albert took over the farm, Grandpa
went one way and Grandma another. He worked on the coast in cannery for a
few years. Then about 1946 when I was a baby he came to live with us. We
lived at the Chilcot house behind the Rancho, while the house was being
built on Riverside drive across from the cemetery. In those early years
while Mom did a lot of substitute teaching, he was our baby sitter. The only
memory of him I have at this stage is of a giant coming up the stairs as I
sat at the top as a toddler. My crib had been moved upstairs next to Dad and
Mom's bed over in the corner of the attic as I remember it. When I was two,
it was in his room I think, that I smashed my little finger on my left hand
by knocking down the stick that held the window open. My main memories of
him are in the back yard at Riverside drive. He would mow the lawn with a
hand mower a few rounds at a time. Then he'd sit in the wooded lawn chairs
and we'd chat. I was a real question box in those days. We enjoyed one
another's company immensely. For a couple of years I would have been alone
with him a great deal, while Mom substitute taught in the schools. Mom and
perhaps others called me Grandpa's little man. When his health began to fail
Ida Truax would come and baby sit with me. I remember visiting him in the
hospital after a heart attack. He said he never wanted to go back there
again. His room was right next to mine. Everyone else was at the other end
of the house. (Jerry was not even dreamed of yet!) [Grandpa died in the
night of November 14, 1950. Grandpa's death left me with many years of
fears, nightmares and night terrors that I had no way to really understand.
Ed cg]. It was only with my conversion in 1970 that I began to pray for him
in earnest. Now I see that he was a great gift in my life.
He surely was the instrument of a deep gaping wound, but
that wound is becoming more and more the ability to bring Jesus healing love
to others, especially old men and women and others I will not mention.
These very wounds become the bond with others that heals others especially
when I pray alone at night and many other times. Now being conscious of
these wound's source does not always remove them. In fact at times I'm more
powerfully triggered by some actions of men and women than ever. At this
stage that however, is the greatest gift of my life!
I share this with you privately. Perhaps some
of this could go into the newsletter. I'll let you be the judge. Perhaps
something of the fear could be shared. If I give it a light enough touch so
as not to terrify folks it might help some deal with the effects that these
things have in their own lives. We do inherit this stuff in varying degrees
and all need to work it through to come to freedom in Jesus.
May God Bless you and keep you forever.
With love in Jesus and Mary,
Br. Gerard David

Noteworthy News from your
e-editor…Connie Gale…
Hello
Family, Thought I'd rush to catch this in the Newsletter before our Senior
Editor Florence hits the press! I need to share with our family what a
GREAT time I have had in helping Florence prepare this newsletter...this is
a side of her that I haven't had the opportunity to experience and I felt
that you probably have not found yourselves in a position to experience this
either...thus my need to share! As your e-mail letters came snowballing
in, and I in turn printed them and sent them on to Florence, she became
more and more excited about "all the News". "Gosh," she says..."We sure are
getting a lot of News!"...and something like "this newsletter is growing so
big that I'm sure it's going to take a double stamp to mail!" Her
excitement over her last issue is almost intoxicating!...and she has been
very cute thru this whole process! I want to thank you all for your
willingness to participate in keeping our Family Newsletter alive by sharing
what is going on in your lives...for family and friends to know and love one
another.

For the next Newsletter I would like to feature some silliness...I
would ask you to think back to a (favorite) food that you ate as a child but
wouldn't think of eating now...and share the story that goes along with it!
For example, I can remember eating spoonfuls of Nestle's Quick cocoa
mix...you know that sugary powdered stuff that we used to mix in milk for
instant chocolate milk? (Ughhhhhhh!)...but the story that goes with it...we
(Sorry Shirley, Jim and Tom...you don't get to tell this one!..) were living
in the
Durham Street house in Portland (we moved from this house when I was 8 years
old, so I was probably around 6 or 7 years old.) Off of
the stairway coming down from our bedrooms was a den...and in the den was a
cupboard that also opened into the kitchen. Mom used to keep her Nestle's
Quick in that cupboard! Well, it didn't take us long to figure out that we
could hide a spoon or two in the cupboard, then sneak down the stairs and
ever so quietly open the cupboard and get into the Quick mix...of course
taking big spoonfuls of the powdery sugar delight!. Well, mom was no dumb
|
bunny either...I suppose she found the spoon(s) that gave us away but really
don't know for sure...It didn't take mom long to switch out the Nestle's
Quick to Hershey's powdered baking chocolate...at any rate, the four of us
went on another Quick raid and of course being the Big Sister, I went
first...taking a spoonful of the cocoa...and I had to try very hard not to
sputter...Then Shirley did the same and kept the poker face...it wasn't
until Jimmy and Tommy got theirs...a great big spoonful as I recall...and
started spitting and sputtering all over the place making lots of noise
about all that bitter stuff...and of course Mom heard us and caught us red
handed! Have a Holy and Healthy
Holiday Season and New Year 2001! Connie & Jim Gale (Jim’s daughter)

Connie, I just checked my alternate email address and yes I received this
message. Watch for my new web site and advertise it if you want. It is
www.McKenzieValleyMarket.com. It is
under construction right now but we hope it is on line by the first of
November.
I am putting the finishing touches on using
the income from the business to buy on a land sale contract 300 acres
including a wild stream with a beautiful view of the McKenzie River at the
Good Pasture Island Bridge. The land is steeply sloped but the road is in
and making plans to build in a year or two. Maybe sooner. I will divert
the stream into a flume next to the house and cascade the water into a falls
right outside my bedroom with floor to ceiling windows. I am only going to
improve 8 acres around the house site, snake a road up and around the house
and create a bridge over the stream before it turns back down the hill via
the old road above my land.
I've added 520 square feet of growing space to my green
house that was only 600 square feet to start. Moved the wood shop and the
craft tables added lights and a heating system. Now I am starting to sell
young African Violets that are just starting to bloom for the first time. I
have 65 different colors. Janet Gerding King got me going on this project
after hand selecting 200 plants for me about a year and a half ago.
Well its getting late in the fall and I am getting the
garden ready for winter. I mulched and fed the grass today. The first day
that it has not rained like buckets since early Monday morning. I moved the
clothes line and am starting to put the finishing touches on a flagstone
patio. As long as I am going to be here for another 3 years I want to be
comfortable. The front yard is just about finished, I glassed in the front
porch and created the stream of my dreams across the front yard following
the stone steps. My postage stamp lawn takes longer to get the lawn mower
into the space than it takes to mow it. Still I find joy in the small
things. I am sending along an attachment that you might enjoy.
Are you going to send the newsletter as an attachment
document or is it going to wrap itself around the page like it showed up
here? And I am still wanting the photos that you might want to send for the
Frommherz/King genealogy book. Please put out the word that I am copying
photos into my files then producing a CD with all of them separately placed
in pockets for the book. Them if you want to have a real photo of any of
them just take the CD to a photo shop for printing on good paper just like
the original. I want Frommherz' at play, interesting situations, vacations
of your dreams and stuff that in a hundred years your great grandchildren
might say "they were just real nice folks"! Publishing date is set for the
400th anniversary of the King's coming to
America
with a possible shorter Frommherz version published on the 100th anniversary
of the Frommherz/King Wedding. I heard a good one yesterday. "Do you still
celebrate the birthdays, wedding anniversary dates etc. of the deceased"?
reply "Yes as long as there is someone around to remember those dates".
Sooooooooooooo! I'll let that stand on it's own merits. Dan

Hi, Connie! I'm so
delighted that you're taking the newsletter to the next level for Mom. I've
toyed with putting it on the Internet for her, but my heart was not really
in it other than to support what she does. She is really excited about your
taking it over. So, I want to thank you so much. It is a wonderful
compliment to Mother for you to do this.
To answer your

Good luck. I hope you type fast! Claire

Hi
Connie, I guess this is what I need to let the family know what is
happening here at the Tietze Household. I never seem to get regular letters
off to Aunt Florence. Annella just turned 24. She re-upped in the Air
Force in May and received $15,000 bonus as an incentive. With the money,
she took me to Disneyland for 5 days. We had a wonderful time. We actually
spent 4 days in Disneyland. The first day we spent part of on the airplane,
we got to our motel and rested a bit then took off for a partial day at
Disneyland. We spent 4 more days from dawn to dusk and saw about everything
there was to see. We had such fun. Nellie is now stationed in Omaha,
Nebraska. She just moved into a new apartment and is very excited about
it. She was home in August for...
Adam's wedding.... Adam
married Rebekah Burlingame in August. It was a beautiful wedding. Aunt
Margie and I did the flowers for the wedding. Aunt Margie did a wonderful
job on the bridal bouquet and the bouquets for the bridesmaids. I got to do
the throwaway bouquet as my first bridal type bouquet. It turned out nice,
too bad she "threw it away"!!! Adam and Bekah have made their first home
in Silverdale, Washington as he is still in the Navy. He is in the
Submarine division, and is scheduled to go out
again in November.
Darrel has begun a new
job. He got his contractor license late July and has been working steady
since. People seem to just keep on coming in with jobs for him. It's kind
of neat to see what's happening.
I
continue with my Religious Gift Shop. I moved it to Winchester Bay in
October of 1998 and really enjoy being part of the community there. I enjoy
my business very much. I make and repair rosaries, mend, sew and alter
clothes. I do just about anything that people ask of me...but I do have
limits. I also take care of Catholic Churches that invite me to bring my
religious articles to their parishes. At this time I only have Sublimity,
but I hope to add a few as time goes on. My shop is for all faiths, except
Jehovah's Witness, Mormon, Buddhist....but I do cater to the Catholic. I
could not do only Catholic as there are 17 other churches in the Reedsport,
Winchester Bay area and just Catholic wouldn't do it. Merry Christmas to the

Hey
there, School is going well. It is keeping me very busy. I have declared a
major, biology, but I'm not sure how stuck on it I am. I'll probably end up
with a biology degree, but I think I'm going to explore a few other subject
areas in the meantime. Well, I'll catch up with you later. Mike

done if she had had access to the computer all her life! Thanks Connie

Not
sure if this system will download Microsoft Word. I am presently using
Claris Works on a Mac PowerBook, which is about 3 years old. If I need to I
will create a new address to use with our PC. In fact here is Jaima's
address:
brown_sunshine87@hotmail.com She can download it for me. Thanks,
Marty

Please add the address of our third cousins daughter Andrea Frommherz in
Germany to your list of those receiving the new and revisited "From the
Heart". I wrote to her this morning. She is excited to have this little
paper as she puts it.
ANDREA.FROMMHERZ@roche.com And to Doug's question "she would have run
for president"!!!

I
received the following message back from our cousin in Germany this evening
(Sunday) If you do not read Germany it says that she is away from the
office until 7 November and pressing matters should be handled by others but
personal matters may be attended to on her return. Please wait until that
date to send her the family newsletter. She will be sure to bring it
directly to all our cousins over in Germany. Daniel

Dear Connie, I have Word, can unzip and Frank (and Bridget) can be reached
by email at: ffromherz@archdpdx.org
(note that you just had a minor typo). Hope your fingers survive the
typing! (would it be worth it to scan in any of the hard copy letters you
get and do an OCR-trace? Perhaps if you
requested that the non-computer Fromherz and affiliates type their
letters?) Just a thought...
Sylvia

Congratulations, you have successfully reached John Fromherz.
OK, now that that's out of the way, here's a suggestion. Aunt Florence used
to request a donation from time to time for postage. Since e-mail costs
virtually nothing, you won't need to buy stamps and envelopes, but a scanner
would greatly simplify the typing chores. I suggest taking up a collection
to buy a scanner for the newsletter. If you can get $5.00 from each of the
recipients you should be able to buy a decent scanner. Heck, if you get
half the purchase price it would still be worth buying one for your own use.
John
