TRAVELS WITH CHARLIE AND MARILYN 7/5/10
Time is
really going fast, already July. We have spent the week in beautiful
Pacific City, OR. The photo of the trees and ocean in the distance is
our view out our bedroom window of the ocean. We have a very large
campsite and this park was really filled this holiday weekend.
We went
up to Tillamook our first day here. Beautiful day for it and on the way
we stopped to see some hang gliders jumping off the road and sailing
down to the beach below. I went to the Quilt Museum and we did the
Quilt Trail of all the quilt blocks painted on historic barns -- of
course, I took photos of every one. Cows are everywhere -- this is
dairy county, if you haven't guessed that! We had a day and half of
rain here in Pacific City, but it cleared up to be beautiful. Don
and Barb arrived on Thursday and Charlie has been helping them with some
stuff on their trailer and we have been enjoying time with them and
wonderful meals together. Unfortunately, I came down with a bad cold
and spent a couple of days trying to get better while the brothers
worked. Feeling much better, yesterday we all went beach combing on
the beach here, about a 3 mile walk altogether. I got some nice agates
and shell pieces - tide was out and we could even see some tide pools -
the one photo is an anemone under a rock. There were starfish out on a
big rock, but tide was not low enough to get to them, so I took a photo
of them with the zoom and got only a couple of small pink blurbs! Barb
is the professional at finding agates and she came back with some really
big ones and Don found one with some crystal forming in it!
We are
planning on leaving here tomorrow for Bend, Oregon for the quilt show in
Sisters this weekend. I think it will be much hotter there. Barb says
there is a lot to do at the Bend preserve and we will hopefully get in
some bike riding. Hugs to all until next week. I am excited to see
this famous quilt show in Sisters. Charlie and Marilyn |

TRAVELS WITH CHARLIE AND MARILYN 6/28/10
We have
had a very busy and fun week here in Salem with Don and Barb. We did
some bike riding along the river trail and we got to see an osprey (sp?)
nest atop a phone pole and a rainbow on a clear day. It
was very
hot but a really nice 8.5 mile ride. We did some more fun geocacheing
and I caught photos of some really pretty flowers. (more info
www.geocacheing.com)
Saturday
we went to a Gymnastic recital for Emma, Don and Barbs grand daughter
and enjoyed a nice evening of dinner with other family members after the
show. Family reunion picnic was Sunday and we had a nice crowd and good
food. Can you tell we are eating a lot!
We are
doing errands and wash today in Salem which is a common thing you have
to do when camping - wash often. We will leave here for Pacific City,
Oregon, over at the beach, again tomorrow. Don and Barb will be
joining us in their trailer for the July 4th weekend. Hugs to all,
Charlie and Marilyn |

TRAVELS WITH
CHARLIE AND MARILYN 6/21/10
We have
still had a lot of rain here in Newport, Sunday it rained all day. We
have gotten in a couple of bike rides on days that the sun came out in
the afternoon.
Friday
we spent the day with Charlie's brother Don and wife Barb. We started
out at the Yaquina Head Lighthouse area - a very beautiful one and a
gorgeous day. It was a very low minus tide and the tide pools
below
the lighthouse were exposed. Barb and I decided to take on getting down
to them where they had a lot of steps. But.... the beach is not sand,
it's all small stones and the volunteer said it's like walking on
marbles -- it was! Quiet exciting and I thought Charlie would kill me
going down there - but I turned around and here Don and Charlie were
right behind us walking like it was nothing - do you think it is bigger
feet that works better. But we made it and we saw some pretty pink
coral, you can see the rocks under the water. We didn't venture too far
out to the pools as it was covered with slippery kelp. Walking up was
easier than getting down! After a park lunch of subway we did some
Geocatching - using GPS to look for treasures around Newport. This
involves a lot of walking, so we got in some exercise. Here's Charlie
and I with the first find. On one of the trails we say beautiful wild
pale pink fuchsias. Several treasures we didn't find and several we did
- it was a fun day but we were exhausted when we got back to the
trailer. The first photo (I can't get them to attach in order, the last
one always comes out on top) is us finishing up the day at the last
trail down by the beach - do we look tired!
Will be
leaving here Wednesday and heading to Salem for family reunion next
weekend, hopefully we are in for some better weather inland.
Hugs
to all, Charlie and Marilyn |

TRAVELS WITH
CHARLIE AND MARILYN 6/16/10
We are
now in Newport Oregon (South Beach) where the weather is very crappy
today. Hoping to have more sun tomorrow. Our spot is right at the
front of the Park and this Campground ( Whalers Rest) is much nicer than
Florence. Charlie put up our awning and with the trees it has not
gotten wet with the rain the last 2 days and keeps the mud out of our
walking area. Not much rain today, just a few sprinkles this morning,
but still very grey and cloudy.
Despite
the weather, we ventured out to the beach this afternoon with our rain
jackets and boots. The beach is just a 150 yards across Hwy. 101
from the park - a short path from our campsite leads us to it.
Tide was
coming in and it was very quiet. This is a picture of my stash from the
beach and a lonely seagull. I like them even if they are broken because
the shape and color are good, but did get a couple of interesting rocks,
a full shell, and interesting driftwood pieces. Clam shells were
not broken and one was a beautiful red. You never know where I will use
these or they just might show up in our yard.
Note the
photo of Charlie - it's the closest he will ever get to walking on
water! Want to see the 2 Lighthouses here at Yaquina Bay, so, I am
hoping the weather clears up for some good photos.
Hugs, to
all. Marilyn and Charlie |

TRAVELS WITH
CHARLIE AND MARILYN 6/12/10
Our
journey continues -- We are staying at the South Jetty Thousand Trails
campground - weather has finally given us some sunshine. Yesterday we
rode our bikes through town and it was chilly and a little windy. In
the afternoon we went to a lagoon and I got some nice photos of the Blue
Heron as they stand in the marshes. A beautiful site when they took off
with large blue wings - but I was too slow to catch them flying - just
like my seagulls!
This
morning we got up very early and left for Perpetua Cape to see the tide
pools at minus tide. Left about 6:30 for a 25 mile car ride of the
coast, to find a high cliff above the ocean with many rocks below -
after a short walk down we reached many rocks and they were really tough
to walk on - even with our walking sticks. And to boot, nothing in the
tide pools - we saw people walking on the beach, but no way to get to it
without going over all the rocks - and we are just too old for that! So
we continued walking around the trail to the other side of the cove and
I got a lot of photos of the cove, our small path, great silhouetted
treed, and flowers as we walked. Ending up on the other side, still too
many rock to climb over so off we went back to the parking area. We had
a good walk though!
Driving
back we stopped at a viewpoint and there were seals lying on the rocks
below - glad we didn't have climb down to those! Many were surfing the
ocean - can you see him in the one photo coming up for air.
This
afternoon we will go on a bike ride down the South Jetty - nice road for
riding and I'm sure, since it is Saturday, all the dune buggies will be
racing up and down the dunes - this entire area is all big sand dunes.
Hugs for
now - as we continue to enjoy our sunny weather here on the
Oregon
Coast.

Fr. Gerard
Gross writes: News for the Monastery
Dear Family and Friends,
June 12, 2010
Peace be with you.
Rejoice that our Abbot was
re-elected May 29th for a six year term. Br. Tom Nabity died
in early May. He was the total bed patient that went all over the
monastery in his electric reclining wheel chair, even chopping
vegetables for the cooks. Every night for many years we prayed the
rosary in his room every night at 6:30 PM. So we miss him. We have 3
Postulants and two novices with 3 more brothers promising to enter as
postulants in the next month. Two of these are relatively young like in
twenties and early thirties I think. So please pray that we can break
the barrier to keeping younger men. Most of our new men are in their
fifties.
Today we had a 5 K run on our
property. I ran a decent 28 minute time not fast enough for any prizes.
The winner ran in 18 minutes. There is one very long steep hill on the
route, with the rest of the route after the hill in the middle being
gently down hill on grass, which is very nice for running! Otherwise,
I’m really looking forward to the Perpetual Adoration Retreat June 28 to
July 1. Our Atlanta Eucharistic Congress was a great event as usual this
year with maybe 30,000 people in attendance. I heard confession with
maybe another 20-30 priests for 2 ½ hours. Our construction is moving
along well except that they need some kind of permit slowing down the
main construction, but the renovation of the old barns is moving right
along.
There is plenty to pray for
these days that I cannot tell you about, but you can surely pray for the
many confessions that I hear. It makes the challenges of my life seem
like nothing!!!
Immaculate Heart of Mary, Pray
for us!
Sacred Heart of Jesus, be with
us and draw us into Your heart to dwell for ever!
Shalom

Jenny & Steve Jackson write:
Hi Connie, Thanks for the update from Dick! Will
keep Aunt Mary in prayer!
For the newsletter, if it's not to late:
The Jackson family is all fine and keeping busy, at
least trying to. Kelly, our daughter, graduated from PSU a year ago with
a degree in business accounting and is now working for Boeing in
Arizona. We miss her terribly but am grateful she was able to get a good
job with the job market the way it is right now. We talk nearly everyday
on our cell phones so it's like she's right here. Garrick is close by so
we see him from time to time. He is in school to become a helicopter
pilot instructor. He has gotten his private and commercial licenses.
He's also contemplating joining the Army in hopes to gain more flight
time. He's still a reservist for the Air Force which he spent 6 years
in. I am still interpreting and hope to continue with that until I
retire. Hard to think of being that old! I just turned 60! Yikes!!
We'll not be at the cousins dinner this year as we will
be on our way home from Yellowstone. We're going with another couple for
just over a week or so. I'll be at the family reunion, tho, and look
forward to seeing everyone there.
Love to all!

TRAVELS WITH
CHARLIE AND MARILYN 5/21/10
We
finally got the trailer packed with machines, fabric, paint, tools and
Charlie's books( you know who rates on this trip!) and left early
Thursday morning Arrived in Morgan Hills Thousand Trails - right at the
foot of the Santa Cruz mountains in the afternoon. A creek runs past the
campground and there are many birds around. The woodpecker wakes us up
each morning and the blue jays won't sit long enough to take a photo of
them. This little bird I thought was a robin, is not -- it has white
designs in his feathers so have no idea what he is.
Today we went on a scouting trip around Morgan
Hill and Gilroy. Of course, the first top was the local fabric store -
cute and very nice for this town - big quilt show coming end of
September and we just might be passing by at that time on the way home.
But really looking forward to Sisters Quilt Show in July. Bike shop gave
us directions to the local bike trail we will ride on tomorrow. The
fruit stands all around yielded many choices - cherries @ .99 lb are
bountiful in season and the strawberries are enormous, the size of small
apples - artichoke country here and they are .79 ea. compared to 2.99
at home - so we will eat healthy this week.
Will be riding tomorrow and will try to get
photos of us on our new bikes.
Hugs, Charlie and Marilyn |

TRAVELS WITH CHARLIE AND MARILYN May 26, 2010
We keep rolling along. On Sunday we took a bike ride on the Coyote
Trail in Morgan hill. Here is me and Charlie with our new bikes. It was
very windy and we did 3 miles - good for me since I haven't been out
since before we went to Laughlin. Along the trail were wild poppies
everywhere and they grow them between the rows of grapes in the
vineyards - I suppose for seeds as there are a lot of seed places in
Morgan Hill. There was an old barn on the trail and I went inside -
kind of a fun shot.
It rained a lot last night. Today is beautiful again. We got to Russian
River this afternoon and took a walk down to the river which runs all
along this campground. Very quiet and low forest here as it is in the
valley of Sonoma/Napa -- big wine country with hills of vineyards
everywhere. I love to photograph the birds and with a lot of patience
on our walk I got this blue jay and the woodpecker. This blue jay is a
little different than the one we had in Morgan Hill which had a large
comb on his head. But my big zoom lens was able to get him in the
trees.
We will be here for a week and looks like the rain is over for now. I
take my camera everywhere and am hoping to get some good shots that
might make a good quilt one day.
Hugs, for now. Marilyn and Charlie. |

TRAVELS WITH CHARLIE AND MARILYN May 30, 2010
We are at the Russian River this weekend for Memorial Day. Not a lot of
water in the river - considering the downpours we had on Thursday all
day and night. Yesterday was beautiful and we took a drive up Hwy 128
to Mendocino and Ft. Bragg, about 150 miles round trip. The road was
very curvy but I got some nice pictures of old barns - this is one I
might do a quilt on . We had lunch, I had packed, on the beach in
Mendocino - a sea gull kept begging for my food so he stayed around for
me to get some good photos. Ft. Bragg was nice and I got to go to 2
fabric stores and there was a quilt show there today - a day short of
our visit. Oh well, Sisters here I come!
Got up early today and went for a bike ride on the river trail - nice
and paved - did about 4 miles - I am slowly getting there. I took a
video so you could see the river and hear the rapids and the birds
chirping - came out good, but too large to send. Will probably do a ride
again in the morning - want to keep going so I get stronger. Charlie
wanted to watch the race today, so I decided to sew on my jacket - he
kindly took some photos of me outside in my portable sewing area. It is
very warm here today, as was yesterday - I'm sure up in the high 80's.
Off we go to another voyage on Wednesday. Hugs to all. |

TRAVELS WITH CHARLIE AND MARILYN May 31, 2010
- Grocery
Shopping!
We're at the thousand
trails next to the Russian River in Cloverdale California. This morning
was
cool
and we decided to go
for a bike ride. We drove over to the river and parked in the parking
lot. Taking our folding bikes out of the truck, we decided to ride on
the bike path paralleling the freeway to the grocery store and pick up a
few items. As you can see my wife Marilyn picked up quite a few items. A
total of four bags approximately weight of 40 to 50 pounds. Of course
you know who's bike at the trailer behind. The
Bob trailer and bicycle handled well with the load. Oh yes we had to
stop at Starbucks on the way! |

TRAVELS WITH CHARLIE AND MARILYN June 6, 2010
We have spent several days in Brookings, OR--- it rained all the way
here from Eureka with fog through the Redwoods and we have had very
heavy rain - like I have never seen! Today it is raining again, but not
quite as hard all the time. This is the pleasure the folks in the
Northwest like, but I heard several in the store say they had had enough
right now. It doesn't bother us as we don't see much rain and
understand everyone of you at home is sweltering in the heat. It
did clear up somewhat yesterday and we went down to the Harbor -- water
was just full of mud from the rains - a small farmers market was on the
pier. We then went up the beaches and stopped at Harris Beach State
Park where we donned our boots, hats and walking sticks to do some beach
combing. A couple of ladies wanted their photo taken and asked me, so
they did one for us too - here we are ready to go! I just love the
Western Seagulls and take lots of photos of them - it's hard to get them
flying, but I did get this great one of 2 landing in the water - a
future quilt, maybe? The skies were very grey, but we had a lot of fun
- my favorite thing to do on the beaches - Charlie just goes along to
satisfy my whims, like most husbands!
The flowers have been in bloom all the way up here and Oregon is famous
for it Rhododendrons and this is a photo of some not yet destroyed by
the rain. Usually they are ending their bloom when we arrive for family
reunion the end of June, but being here earlier this year, they are
everywhere, along with the poppies and tons of wild flowers.
Looks, like we will stay in today and I will get some hand work done.
Hugs to
all, Marilyn and Charlie |
